Replicating a Thing

You can replicate things within an organization or to another organization.

Replicating a thing enables you to copy a thing within an organization or to copy a thing to another organization. When replicating a thing within an organization, the replicated new thing uses the same thing definition. When replicating a thing to a different organization, you either allow the Management Portal to create a new thing definition or select a thing definition that contains all the attributes, alarms, properties, and methods of the thing definition that exists in the thing definition from which the thing is copied.

To replicate a thing, you must be an organization administrator in both source and destination organization.

Replicating a thing copies all of the historical data of a thing. The following items are copied:

  • name

  • thing definition

If a thing is copied within an organization, the following items are copied:

  • attributes

  • alarms

  • event logs

  • geofence history

  • location history

  • property history

The following items are not copied:

  • thing Id

  • files associated with the original thing

  • bound things

  • API usage

You can replicate a thing from Actions menu on both the Things page and the thing details page. However, the current organization only appears in the organization list if you replicate it from the thing details page.

You must be an organization administrator on both organizations.

  1. On the Things page, click the View icon of the thing you want to replicate.
  2. On the thing details page, select Actions > Replicate.
  3. In the Thing Replicate window, select the Org Key of the organization to which you want to copy the thing.
  4. Select the Thing definition you want the copied thing to use.
    Note:

If you select the current organization in step 3, then this menu is not available and the new thing gets the same thing definition. If you select a different organization, then you should select Create new thing definition or select a thing definition that contains the same parameters as the original thing definition.

  5. In the New thing key box, type the new thing key.

For more information about valid values, see Field Formats and Limitations.

  6. Click Replicate.
