Creating Sub-Organizations

An sub-organization is an organization below the top level organization container to which other items belong, such as applications, roles, thing definitions, and things.

You can create sub-organizations to further partition the items in Device Cloud. For example, under your top-level organization, you could define sub-organizations for production, development, and testing.

The usage information of a sub-organization can be rolled up to its parent organization.

Sub-organizations inherit some organization configuration settings from the parent, such as email templates. However, if you want to use other items, such as thing definitions from the parent, you need to export them from the parent and import them into the sub-organization. You can share things with other organizations from the thing details page of individual things.

Each organization is defined with or without the ability to define sub-organizations. If the current organization does not have the ability to define sub-organizations, the Sub-Organization link does not appear on the Administration page.

On the Organizations page, the hierarchy of the organizations and sub-organizations is shown in the Parent column. On this page you can view, edit, and delete organizations. On the organization details page, you can move the organization to a different location in the hierarchy.

Select Tools > Administration and then click Sub-Organizations.
On the Organizations page, click New org.

On the Adding Org page, enter the required details.


Field	Description
Key	An identifier for the organization definition that is globally unique within the organization. For more information about key formats and limitations, see Field Formats and Limitations.
Name	The name of the organization that is displayed on Management Portal pages.
Description	An optional description of the organization.
Locale	Identifies the language, number format, timestamp format, and other formatting preferences for the organization.
Allow sub orgs	Specifies whether the new sub-organization can have sub-organizations.
Customer Reference ID	An optional field for additional organization-related information.

When you finish, click Add.
(Optional) To move the organization to a different location in the hierarchy, do the following:
1. Click Move.
2. In the Move Organization window, select the parent organization in the New parent list, and then click Move.
The Parent Org field on the organization details page shows the new parent org.

Before adding an existing user to the new sub-organization, ensure they have accepted their first invitation and logged in once to the original organization. Check their invitation status under the Invitations tab on the Users page in the original organization.
